When the Stars Lead to You

⭐⭐⭐⭐

When the Stars Lead to You Ronni Davis 400 pages | Published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Devon meets Ashton while spending the summer at the beach with her family, and they have an instant connection. After Ashton breaks her heart at the end of the summer, Devon spends the next year putting herself back together, ready to move on and continue chasing her dreams. But on the first day of senior year, Ashton shows up at her school. As the two reconnect, Devon learns the truth about why Ashton disappeared a year ago, and what it means for their future.

First things first: A trigger warning for depression, self-harm, suicide, and mental illness.

This was not at all what I thought this book would be about. I really assumed Ashton was an asshole - simple. But wow this went a lot darker than I anticipated. I was happy that the conversation about depression seemed very open - Devon was adamant about loving Ashton no matter what, but we still saw her express her fear and nerves about it.

I liked Devon a lot - I admired how driven she was but not obsessive. Too often, I feel like driven and motivated is an intense and "quirky" character trait. Devon was chasing her dreams but still valued her time as a normal teenager.

The whole book, I felt very connected with Devon. When she was sad, I felt sad - when she was happy, I felt happy. Kudos to Davis for writing in a way that helped me really put myself in Devon's place and feel with her. I appreciated that the end of the story felt hopeful and full of possibilities. I'm very excited to read whatever Davis writes next!
