The Set Up: Clara is determined to make her new role as a ladies companion work so she can continue to finance her brothers education. When she arrives in Devon to spend the holidays with her employer and their friends, she meets Neville - a quiet man who prefers the company of animals to people. Over the course of the Christmas holiday, the two bond over quiet moments caring for a wild pony. But when Clara has to leave suddenly to look after her brother, Neville has to decide if he’s brave enough to leave the quiet routine he’s grown used to, or forge a new path for the both of them.

This last book of The Parish Orphans of Devon was a really lovely ending to the series, and I hope someday Mimi Matthews will do some follow-up books like she’s doing with her Somerset Stories series.

The vibe of this one was so soft and heartwarming, without being saccharine at all. The winter and Christmassy setting was cozy and I think it definitely would have been a great one to pick up during December.

I was so proud of Clara by the end for coming into her own and realizing her own worth and capabilities. She and Neville were such a sweet couple and their story was a real treat to read.
