The Set Up: After her father’s death, Valentine has no choice but to take a position as a lady’s companion. When she attends a notorious house party, she’s drawn to Viscount St. Ashton, and the two of them are spotted in a compromising position. St. Ashton has a reputation as an irresponsible womanizer, but something about Valentine has him wanting to be a better man. Determined to do the honorable thing, he proposes to Valentine, who finds that she wants to accept, despite what others may think.

This is another one to check off in Mimi Matthews’ backlist for me - it was a decent story but I know that she has grown a lot since this.

Like her other books, the writing here is elegant and simple, and while I like the characters well enough, I prefer Mimi’s more recent, and much stronger female leads.

I wished for more interactions between the MCs to build up more tension. Overall it’s a charming and pleasant story but I know Mimi has more to give.
