Out and proud Dre is the son of the Democratic presidential nominee; Thoughtful and reserved Dean is the son of the Republican presidential nominee. After a security threat at a debate throws the two together, they connect and develop feelings for each other in the run-up to the presidential election, but their secret relationship could have major consequences for their parents' political careers.

The State of Us was everything that I wish had actually happened in 2016 when an un-qualified man decided to run for president.

This is a book that I think is great for the conversation about interacting with those who have different viewpoints than us. Dean and Dre come from incredibly different upbringings and we get to watch as they learn to hold each other accountable but still come together. I loved that we got to hear from all different perspectives and practice sitting with that and learning to grow from the challenge.

My one (not so serious) major hang-up with this book: The names Dre and Dean are too similar!!! It took me a long time to differentiate between the two.
