The Set Up: Gareth and Joss have a brief but passionate affair in London, ending just days before Gareth receives word his father dies. Months later, he’s now taken his father’s place in Romney Marsh, where he’s accidentally become involved with the local den of smugglers. Gareth is prepared to testify against a local women when her brother Joss steps in, prepared to blackmail Gareth with the secret of their London affair.

This was a really fun mix of historical romance and mystery and adventure. It took me a bit to get into the story, more bc of my own headspace, but once I relaxed and settled in, I really enjoyed it. I thought KJ Charles’ writing style was elevated and appropriate to the time period while still being accessible.

I loved these characters and they were so sweet to each other. Bug hunting?? How cute!! The whole extended cast was really charming. I’m not sure if it was my own lack of focus, but I thought there were a lot of characters to keep track of, which occasionally left me a bit confused, but now that I’m familiar with the world, I’m excited to read the sequel.
