The Secret History by Donna Tartt
559 pages | Published by Penguin Books
The Set Up: A group of college students are immersed in the study of ancient Greek culture and cut off from the rest of the student body. When the group attempts a ritual, things spiral out of control and leads to a murder. As they try to hide what happened, their paranoia makes the situation spiral out of control.
If this had been my introduction into the world of dark academia I think I would have rave reviews for this one. While I really did enjoy it, I thought it was a tad too long, with quite a few mundane scenes that didn’t feel like they added much to the story.
I know this book is considered THE dark academia but I came to this one having read If We Were Villains first, which to me was *chefs kiss*
What I wanted here was a bit more of a true mystery, and a bit of a faster pace. I’m glad to have read it though.
