The Love Hypothesis Ali Hazelwood 352 pages | Published by Berkley
Olive knows that her best friend and her ex would be perfect together but don't want to hurt her feelings. To prove she's moved on, Olive, in a split second decision, kisses the first person she sees - and it happens to be Dr. Adam Carlsen, a faculty member of their lab and known for being harsh and meticulous. Adam agrees to fake-date Olive, saying that he could benefit from the optics as well. Over the course of a month, the two go from being strangers, to friends, to much more.
I gotta say - I didn't think this book would live up to the hype. Everyone seemed to be obsessed with it and I was convinced I wouldn't get it. I WAS WRONG. Are you kidding me with this book??
Right off the bat I was super worried about the power dynamic of a student dating a faculty member but I thought Ali Hazelwood took the appropriate steps to make sure their entire relationship was above board and consensual. BUT readers should know there actually is an element of sexual harassment in the book, just not between the two MCs.
I could relate a lot to Olive, especially with her fears about public speaking. Her friends Malcolm and Anh were hysterical and I love how much Ali Hazelwood included about the world of academia, as a neuroscientist herself.
This was an actual LOL funny book, but the bottom line: ADAM IS BAE. I'm obsessed with him and he's been immediately moved onto my list of favorite book boyfriends. I'm a sucker for the tough exterior with a heart of gold, and was SO supportive of Olive and career in science, and was just an all around sweet cinnamon roll. 10/10.
