The Set Up: Once a beauty in society, Sylvia has been working as a governess to provide for herself after her father’s suicide and her ostracization. She’s happy in her new life, and is used to keeping busy so that she doesn’t think too much about the life she used to have, or the soldier she once loved, Sebastian. Sebastian’s meddling sister Julia is sure that the two should be reunited, and convinces Sylvia to visit their estate.

While the prose and atmosphere here is what I would expect from Mimi Matthews, this story lacked some of the depth of her later books. It’s a fine book but it’s clear how much she has grown as a storyteller since this one.

It’s a quick read at only about 200 pages, and a sweet take on the beauty and the beast storyline. I felt a lack of connection with the two main characters, but it’s a wholesome and cute story at the end of the day.
