Slow Dance by Rainwbow Rowell
400 pages | Published by William Morrow
The Set Up: Shiloh and Cary were soulmate level best friends growing up, but life took them in different directions after school and now it’s been fourteen years since they’ve spoken. Now, Shiloh is divorced with two kids and living with her mom. When she attends the wedding of a childhood friend, she’s unsure if Cary will be there, let alone want to talk to her.
This hit me HARD. I cried through most of it, even when nothing particularly sad was happening. It was just the VIBE, you know? Melancholy or bittersweet romance is my sweet spot.
Rainbow Rowell is just the GOAT at dialogue. I think I could read a full novel-length conversation if it was written by her. She wove so many themes together in this one: second-chance romance, broken marriages, toxic family dynamics, lifelong friendships, finding trust in relationships.
I really connected with Shiloh, more than maybe any other character I’ve read. She and Cary had this amazing chemistry and tension from beginning to end. I loved getting to know them both as teenagers and adults. You could really feel how much they had grown and how their past shaped them.
I genuinely never wanted this book to end, and now I’m DESPERATE for more Rainbow Rowell adult romances in my life!
