Shiver [review]

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Shiver Maggie Stiefvater 392 pages | Published by Scholastic Inc.

Grace has had a fascination with the wolves that live in the woods behind her house since she was attacked by them as a child. But she feels a strong connection to one, in particular, a wolf with striking yellow eyes. Sam spends half his year as a wolf, and the other wishing he could talk to Grace. Unexpectedly, the two finally come face to face and their relationship falls into place with ease, but staying together is anything but.

As a proud member of #TeamJacob, this book is comforting to my soul. I'm a real sucker for supernatural romance, and Maggie Stiefvater just does it so well. Her worlds feel real and grounded - a real feat when you're writing about, say, werewolves. Maggie's writing is beautiful and tinged with sadness which 100% what I'm looking for.

I thought Grace and Sam were perfectly balanced - Grace levelheaded and reasonable matched with Sam's more poetic soul. The one thing I wish was that we had more time to get to know the two apart before the start of the relationship. I felt like we dove in a little soon.

About halfway in, Sam asks Grace how she would describe him. Her response sums up the way Stiefvater's storytelling makes me feel:

“You're beautiful and sad," I said finally, not looking at him when I did. "Just like your eyes. You're like a song that I heard when I was a little kid but forgot I knew until I heard it again."
