One Dark Throne
Kendare Blake
464 pages | Published by Harper Teen
As is tradition, three sisters Katharine, Arsinoe, and Mirabella are beginning their Ascension Year - the year that one of them will be crowned queen, after killing her other two sisters. Katharine, once seen as the weak sister, is now ruthless and ready to take the crown by any means necessary. But Arsinoe and Mirabella begin to think that things can change - and that maybe there is a better life for them than inevitable death.
I do wish I hadn't waited so long to continue this series, as I had a tough time remembering the characters and their relationships. But once I got back into the story, I was able to pick it up pretty quickly. This second installment had me more invested than the first - I felt a little detached to the characters in Three Dark Crowns, and it wasn't until the revelation at the end that I was hooked and wanted to continue reading.
I absolutely loved the difference in Katharine between books one and two - I couldn't wait to find out what had happened to her in the time she was missing that had changed her so much, and the story didn't let me down.
One thing that I notice about this series though is I feel a lack of details that could really elevate the story for me. There never seems to be a ton of description on anything - the clothes, the food, the scenery. While I'm growing to feel more connected with the characters as the story continues, I think some more world-building would really help that connection.
