Kingdom of Ash [review]

Whew! A solid conclusion to the Throne of Glass series, all 980 pages packed with action! *potential spoilers ahead!*

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Kingdom of Ash (Throne of Glass #7)

Sarah J. Maas

980 pages | Published by Bloomsbury

The conclusion of the Throne of Glass series sends all of the key players in this story off in different directions, each with their own mission to help bring down the Valg king Erawan. Witches, Fae, shapeshifters, and humans all work towards the last stand at Orynth, to finally defeat the dark forces hoping to destroy Terrasen and take control of the world.

WOW. I balked at the length of this book, thinking that there was NO WAY the story would be driving at full force through all 980 pages, but I'm glad that I was wrong. From start to finish the plot kept moving, and nearly every chapter felt like a cliffhanger - I HAD to keep going!

This was such a great ending to this series - a solid conclusion that left things hopeful, though not without the bittersweet tone that is to be expected after such a brutal war.

Once Aelin was rescued, I was glad (well, not glad, but you get it) that it was clear she would need time to heal after her trauma, and no one expected her to just be fine. Knowing Aelin's strength and attitude, I was worried for a minute that she would just bounce back - I was happy to see that real trauma was taken seriously.

Manon was a stand out for me in this book, and really the series as a whole. I thought she had the most interesting character arc - from White Demon to Chrochan Queen. While I wasn't surprised by the thirteen's sacrifice, this was the saddest loss to me.

Something I really appreciated about this ending was how much of a team effort the entire mission was. The Throne of Glass series felt very much like a Chosen One tale - so I assumed that in the end it would be Aelin alone unleashing a devastating final blow to take down the villain. It was nice to find that by the end things were not playing out how I thought they would.

This was my first Sarah J. Maas experience and it didn't disappoint! I would definitely recommend this series to anyone looking for a YA fantasy - but start with Assassin's Blade first to get the full picture! I hear a ton of praise for her A Court of Thorns & Roses series, which I will be adding to my 2020 To-Read list!
