Graveyard Shift by M.L. Rio
144 pages | Published by Flatiron Books
The Set Up: Five night-shift workers cross paths every night for a smoke break in an ancient college cemetery. One night, they discover a freshly dug grave realize it’s connected to strange events around town.
I thought this was going to be much scarier than it ended up being, but hat could be my fault; I don’t read much in terms of thrillers or horror, so I was bracing for terror. It did have a creepy vibe to it, and was a good novella to pick up to get into the Halloween spirit.
Rio really nailed the atmosphere and I loved that the book takes place all in one night. I could picture this small college town perfectly.
I was obsessed with If We Were Villains, so I was excited to get another ensemble cast from ML Rio, but I think this could have been better as a full length novel, with a bit more character development.
