forever (The Wolves of Mercy Falls #3)

⭐⭐⭐

forever Maggie Stiefvater 390 pages | Published by Scholastic

In the third installment of The Wolves of Mercy Falls, now its Sam's turn to be the human wondering about his wolf out in the forest. While Grace is learning the ropes of being a new werewolf, the others begin really researching the science behind the wolves and possible cures. But when a girl is discovered dead in the forest, attacked by a wolf, a hunt is sanctioned to get rid of all of the wolves in Mercy Falls.

Maggie Maggie Maggie. God, I just adore her writing. It's just so melancholy and lovely and fills me with a nostalgia that I absolutely love. I was particularly compelled in this book by Sam's relationship with Beck - the disillusionment of a hero matched with the pure love and bond of a parental figure - chefs kiss.

This was the most stressful book of the three for me - you could feel the tension between Sam and really the community as a whole growing as they all assumed he'd kidnapped and killed Grace & Olivia. I was glad that Sam eventually had Koenig on his side so that he wasn't completely alone in his fight for the wolves. The final hunt sequence was also SO exciting to read.

Overall I liked this ending to Sam & Grace's story, but I felt there was so much left unaddressed at the end. Did people stop suspecting Sam of being a killer? Will Sam have to shift back and forth again? Does Tom Culpeper's move insinuate that no one is going after the wolves anymore? I just had a lot of questions at the end that made me feel like I was missing something.
