Blood & Honey (Serpent & Dove #2)

Shelby Mahurin

528 pages | Published by HarperTeen

After escaping her evil mother Morgane, Lou and her gang are on the run from other witches, the crown, and the church. In their plot to finally take down Morgane, Lou and Reid decide their best chance is to gain allies from their enemies - blood witches and werewolves. But as they grow their alliances, Morgane begins to play a sick game of cat and mouse with innocent lives to try and lure Lou into her dark side of magic.

I'm a MUCH bigger fan of this book than the first. Maybe because I had a better grasp on the world and its characters, but here I felt much more invested. In Serpent & Dove, I didn't feel a sense of payoff like I did with Blood & Honey.

I loved the additional characters we meet - especially Claud. He added a much needed lightness and sense of humor into a big chunk of the book and I hope we get more of him in the next installment.

This book really dug into the issues between Reid and Lou which I think was necessary. Early on I never felt more than a sexual tension between the two and didn't fully believe in their love for each other. Through their journey in this story, they had a lot to work out and come to terms with - their internal struggles as well as their trust in one another. By the end of the book I was glad to have seen their relationship grow and evolve.

Reid was the star of the show for me in this book (between Lou and Reid - Ansel is my fave and for obvious reasons I won't be talking about him I still need TIME). After learning that he has magic, the Archbishop's death, and being cast out of his brotherhood, he had a lot to come to terms with. His is a fantastic story of life's gray areas and that change isn't something to fear.
