Beach Read Emily Henry 384 pages | Published by Berkley
January is a broke romance-writer who sets off to Lake Michigan in less than ideal circumstances - she's going to clean out and sell her recently deceased father's secret second home - the one he bought while cheating on his wife. She meets her new neighbor - another author, and her college rival, Gus. Both suffering from writer's block, the two decide to swap genres and see who can finish their book first.
This was such a grounded and non-cheesy romance. It felt so much more realistic than most - don't get me wrong, I love an over the top romance but sometimes I find myself eye-rolling the drama. Beach Read felt sweet and natural a tad darker than your typical contemporary rom-com. (They're researching a cult, for crying out loud.)
I LOVED the concept here. It was so fun to see January educating Gus on the classic steps of a rom-com while watching them play out in their story as well.
I liked January a lot - aside from her cool name. I appreciated that while she was hurt and feeling broken, she was STILL looking for the silver lining at the end of the day. And let's be real, Gus is just a perfect character. I loved reading how they each interpreted their shared history and learned to see each other not as the classmates they once were but who they grew to be.
