An Ivy Hill Christmas by Julie Klassen
212 pages | Published by Bethany House
The Set Up: Richard Brockwell is relactantly returning home for Christmas, forced by his family’s financial ultimatum. While planning a quick departure back to London, he faces unexpected encounters: an orphaned apprentice, a former love he disappointed, and Arabella Awdry, who wants nothing to do with him.
An Ivy Hill Christmas was a sweet and quick novella, but nothing that really blew me away. It was a good reading palate cleanser.
I defintely felt the Christmassy atmosphere, but the main characters felt a bit underdeveloped to me. I had a hard time forgiving Richard’s rude attitudes at the beginning. And on the other side, I felt like I didn’t know Arabella at all, other than the fact that she was pretty and charitable.
The writing was straightforward, and the plot followed a simple "man returns home for Christmas" formula. Still, it's a light, festive story that fits the season.
