American Royals [review]

*potential spoilers ahead*

This was VERY Gossip Girl and I am Here. For It. This book has everything - romance, backstabbing, love triangles, sexy bodyguards, and near-manslaughter.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

American Royals (American Royals #1)

Katharine McGee 448 pages | Published by Random House

In this world, the American colonies won the Revolutionary War - and George Washington accepted the title of King. Generations later, we have Beatrice, who will be the very first regnant, and her younger siblings, twins Samantha and Jeffery. Beatrice must find a suitable husband to be America's first king consort; Samantha struggles with her identity as the "spare;" and Jeffery finds himself caught between his scheming ex-girlfriend and his long-time friend.

This book was SO fun and I am already desperate for its sequel. It was such an interesting alternative world - what would an American royal family look like? And not only the royal family but America as a whole? I loved the historical references peppered throughout (the royal guard named after Paul Revere, the palace placed at the original Mount Vernon, the Duke of Boston, etc.)

I was immediately invested in each of the Washingtons and their stories. Beatrice and her growing affection for her bodyguard, Sam striving for more attention in a very middle-child-esque way, and Jeff trying to prove that he could be a "normal" boyfriend.

This book was both light and dark - the lightness from the typical tone of a story of princesses, but the darkness of the real-world aspect of social climbers and real family drama and hardships. Daphne was a great villain - desperate for a title and willing to do almost anything to make her mark on the royal family.

The ending literally gave me chills and I couldn't believe it was over - I need the rest of the story!! There was something incredibly powerful about the image of Beatrice, nearly ready to give up her crown, being thrown into the role.

I simply can't wait for the next in this series. Fall 2020 can't come soon enough!!
