The Set Up: Hannah is nervous about her debut season in Bath, and one of the only familiar faces is the intimidating Viscount St. Clare, James. James is fond of Hannah, but when he proposes, pragmatically and incredibly unromantic, she refuses him. He knows they would be a good match, and he’s determine to court her properly.

I had some mixed feelings about this one! Having seen these two characters in previous stories, I was really excited for the dynamic between James and Hannah. They absolutely make a great pair.

The writing was as cozy and lovely as expected from Mimi Matthews, but honestly, the plot felt a bit thin. I almost felt like I was missing part of the story - we’re told that James is fond of Hannah but we don’t really see it happen on the page. I’m sad to say this book was a bit of a letdown for me, since it lacked the great fizzy tension that Matthews usually does so well.

I’ve adored nearly every one of her other books, and you can’t win them all, so this does nothing to deter me as a fan - I still can’t wait for the next of her Belles of London series.
