The Set Up: Scientist and Veronica Speedwell is preparing to resume her expeditions following the death of her guardian, but her plans are altered when she survives an abduction attempt. Rescued by a mysterious baron who claims to know about her past, and the danger she is currently in. The baron leaves her in the care of Stoker, a brooding natural historian. When the baron is murdered, Veronica and Stoker are forced to go on the run.

I’m so glad a Currently Reading Bookish Friend recommended this series, because I instantly fell in love with Veronica Speedwell! This book was a really fun start to the series and I’m excited to continue reading about her adventures.

Veronica is sharp and fearless and I loved watching her friendship with Stoker develop. I’m me, so I was SCREAMING at them to just kiss already!! I’m ready for more of their slow burn but if they don’t make out at some point I’m going to be DISTRAUGHT.

The atmosphere in this book was a whirlwind—from the dark and gritty streets of London to a traveling show and even a glimpse of high society. The writing was witty, fast-paced, and engaging, and while I thought the mystery itself had a bit of an anticlimactic ending, I loved how it set up Veronica’s story and left plenty of intrigue for the future.

Overall, this was such an enjoyable read! If you love historical mysteries with strong heroines, sharp banter, and a hint of romance, I highly recommend picking this one up.
