Yolk

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Yolk Mary H.K. Choi 400 pages | Published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

Jayne is barely getting by in NYC - in school, work, and her personal life, not to mention her serious eating disorder that she hasn't fully addressed yet. Her older sister June lives a completely different life in the same city and the two of them never speak. Until June is diagnosed with cancer.

First things first: Mary HK Choi always has the coolest cover art. Next: CW for eating disorders

This took me a while to get into but the last half of the book just flew by. Gritty and heavy but it still captured the lightness of a crush and familial relationships. I think Choi writes the YA/new-adult voice really well.

I don't know if Choi has had personal experience with eating disorders but her description of it felt VERY real. Definitely read with care if you're someone who has been down that road.

The star of the show was the sister relationship. The equal parts confusion and total understanding or someone you've grown up with felt authentic.

Also books like this make me question why anyone would ever be happy in a city like New York. 🤷‍♀️
